Summary of the Reading:
The author begins by explaining that arguing is in the human nature and in some opinions our way of expressing ourselves. Arguments are everywhere in our everyday lives and sometimes manipulative. Then, the author explains that there are different purposes for different arguments. Next, an ac by Madonna is examined and explained through perspectives. The letter that Martin Luther King Jr wrote from his jail sell in Birmingham is explained as an argument and skills and techniques are shown. The second part of the reading starts with how it is important to understand the arguments that we see everyday and how they affect us. Then advertisements are shown as arguments, with a brief description. the author then reviews some skills needed to make good arguments. It starts with paying attention to the source, including examples. Followed by, "What's at Stake?", there is a process of questions to answer this overall question. "What's the Claim?" is another way for saying what side of the argument is someone on? Lastly, in the reading the author discusses "Emotional, Ethical, and Logical appeals". The author shows where and when arguments are made then shows how they are important and how to understand them.
